nkt cables is one of the leading players for energy cables in Europe but a smaller company on the global field. The Bixby project has offered to us the chance to be on a world-class team together with partners that we like and that we work very well together with.

Let me start with mentioning AEP who have shown leadership in accepting a new technology.

Southwire is a good partner since back in 1998 when we were both pursuing HTS cable projects in parallel to each other. Oak-Ridge National Lab has opened their doors to our researchers. Praxair and American Superconductor are newer partners that we see very long-term and close cooperation with also in the future.

I’m deeply impressed by the US Department of Energy. I’m impressed with the vision that you have, and the decisiveness that you show when you pursue a long-term goal. I believe these are the key ingredients to take leadership in a new technology like the HTS cables.

The HTS cable technology is truly a global technology. It is light, compact, and easy to transport. And everybody needs and wants electrical energy delivered to their doorstep, with the smallest amount of waste and the smallest amount of environmental pollution.

What nkt cables brings to the table, apart from our technical know how, is an access to European customers. Customers that live in Berlin, Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam. Demanding and rational customers that want clean technologies. Customers that want renewable energy that’s transported over long distances. Customers that demand reliability.

I have followed this project closely during the last four years, and I know the challenges that the technical team has faced. And not only the technical team, but also the management team!

We have continually analysed both the short-term and long-term potential of this technology and, I’m happy to say, as of yet we see no show-stoppers. We believe it is immediately possible to make permanent installations that are 1-2 km long. We feel certain that the Triax design is the right design for these first installations.

With some more development, longer lengths will be not only technically feasible, but also economically profitable.

We look forward to expanding the reach of this technology to longer lengths, higher voltages, and greater power.
