Advanced technology in future perspectiveThe actual cable project for AEP represents a significant technological challenge for ULTERATM as two different cable designs are under consideration in this connection. The new cable system is planned to enter into service with the Ohio electricity grid in 2005.
Several other cable players have over the years had superconducting cable systems on their agenda. NKT Cables, Southwire, two Japanese, one Korean and one Mexican cable manufacturer, are the players of today’s elite - all investing resources in superconducting cables.
Assuming that the pilot project turns out successfully for AEP, it is planned that ULTERATM will seek collaboration with an EU utility company with a view to also carrying out a European-based superconducting cable pilot project. The technological knowledge subsequently possessed by ULTERATM is expected to lead to future commercial activities in the field of power delivery systems.
