Fit to meet the futurePublished 5 November 2002
NKT Integration is commissioning a new production line for “active” optical chips at the company’s Birkerød factory in Denmark. The plans to establish sales offices and component design and packaging facilities in North America will also become reality this year.
NKT Integration is NKT’s photonics company which is furthest forward in its commercial development. The company has already supplied optical chips - under the IONAS brand name - for several years. These chips - so-called passive - are used in components that can process the signals transmitted through an optical telecommunications network. These components can either gather, distribute or redirect the signals. With optical components it is not necessary to convert the optical signals to electrical signals in order to perform a required signal processing task.
Following the merger of IONAS this year with CISILIAS, which is developing a new generation of active optical chips, the activities of both companies are now being continued in NKT Integration, which has a market-oriented set-up.
