From scrapped car tyres to synthetic grass

Published 5 July 2005

Nanotechnology

The NKT Group's newest technology company, Nanon A/S, specialises in developing advanced technologies for use in industrial work processes. For example, Nanon has developed and patented nanomanipulation-based technologies that have proven ideal for coating and treating surfaces made of silicone, rubber, polymers, plastics, glass and so on. Entirely new applications are thereby being opened up for a long line of conventional materials.

Nanon is spearheading an exciting EU-sponsored "Super Rubber Project" that is aimed at producing a new, environment-friendly rubber granulate based on redundant car tyres.

Thomas Christensen, head of Nanon’s business development: "Together with three other European companies (see page 5) we are working on developing both the technology and the technical process to manufacture the new recycled product that we call Super Rubber. We have now reached an extremely critical point in the project in which the Super Rubber granulate is currently being tested by a number of potential product customers."

If everything goes as ay Nanon hopes, Super Rubber will become a core component of the synthetic grass surfaces found in parts of the world where there is too much sun, too little rain, and too heavy wear to keep natural grass soft and green.
