NKT in short

NKT is the story of Danish industrial development during more than 100 years. From the early days of electricity to advanced laser technology. With plants and sales offices worldwide, NKT is a part of Danish industry’s global expansion.

NKT has roots penetrating deep into Denmark’s industrial history. In 1891, 24-year old engineer Hans Peter Prior started a factory in Copenhagen, which in 1898 was listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. NKT has been continuously changing ever since. Businesses have come and gone. Today, NKT is a conglomerate consisting of four industrial segments with production and sales worldwide.

The customers
NKT’s clientele is global. From leading European power companies to the Chinese Ministry of Railways, who need customized cable systems. To contract cleaners in the United States, South America, India, China and South Africa, who need floor-care equipment, vacuums and high-pressure cleaners. And to offshore oil companies, who need flexible pipe systems suitable for deepwater usage such as off the coast of Brazil.

But NKT’s first customer was a Copenhagen phone company that ordered 243 kg of telephone wire in 1881. Today, NKT no longer makes telecom cables. Instead, we now focus on the optical industry, where a series of development projects are coming together to build a new business segment.

The owners
NKT is owned by its shareholders. Most are Danish, but 25% of our share capital is estimated to be in foreign hands. At 31 December 2010, NKT had 39,300 shareholders, including around 28,500 registered shareholders. All shareholders may attend the AGM, and usually some 500 take the opportunity to meet the directors and management. NKT has share capital of 474 mDKK, consisting of 23,718,000 shares, each of a value of 20 DKK.
