Absolute emissions

NKTs CO2 emissions in 2009
In 2009, NKT’s total CO2 emission from energy consumption was 113,073 tonnes compared with 112,896 the previous year. During the same period, the level of activity fell 10%. The CO2 emissions relative to the level of activity therefore increased. This reflects that energy comsumption in buildings are largely the same in spite of falling production. In addition, the operation by NKT Cables of two facilities in Cologne will lead for a transitional period to further CO2 emission due to heating.

Of the 2009 emission of 113,073 tonnes, the 33,408 tonnes were attributable to direct combustion of fossil energy sources and 79,665 tonnes attributable to procured energy in the form of electricity and heat. Moreover, our business operations also lead indirectly to CO2 emission; for example, in the form of corporate travel, 2,377 tonnes and product shipment to customers, approx. 27,643 tonnes. NKT has to some extent replaced air travel with tele- and video conferencing, but it should be noted as such there is considerable uncertainty in the figures for Scope 3 (See Glossary below).

GLOSSARY

Scope 1: CO2 emissions from direct combustion of fossil energy sources.
Scope 2: CO2 emissions from procured energy in the form of electricity and heat.
Omsætning: Total consolidated revenue amounted to standard metal prices so that varying metal prices do not give a misleading picture of the revenue. Please refer to Annual Report 2009 p. 37 for details.
Activity related intensity of CO2 emission: Tons of CO2 emissions per. mEUR in turnover valued at standard metal prices.
Scope 3: CO2 emissions caused by air travels.
Scope 3: CO2 emissions caused by transportation of goods.

NKT and Carbon Disclosure Project:

Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an organization consisting of 534 institutional investors who represent USD 64 billion worth of investment.

By means of yearly questionnaires the investors receive an insight into company climate activities prior to potential investment.

During 2010, 7,000 world leading companies have been urged to report to CDP. The data they supply will be compiled into a Global Report that will be published on the CDP website in autumn 2010. NKT’s data will also be visible on this website.
