Absolute emissions

NKT's CO2 emissions in 2010
NKT’s total CO2 emission in 2010 from own energy consumption was 127,865 tonnes in relation to 113,073 tons the year before. Relative to production (activity related intensity),  emission in 2010 was 2% lower than in 2009. We assess that the real reduction in energy consumption was, by itself, greater, approx. 6%, inter alia, because i) 2010 was substantially colder than 2009, ii) NKT Cables operated two factories in parallel in Cologne, and iii) the new Chinese NKT Cables plant was not yet in production in the reported period.

Of the 2010 emissions of 127,865 tons, the 27,612 tons were attributable to direct combustion of fossil energy sources (predominantly heating) and 100,253 tons were attributable to procured energy in the form of electricity and heat (predominantly electricity for machinery).

Moreover, we have begun to form an overview of the CO2 emissions indirectly lead from our business operations, for example from our providers of product shipment and air travel. We are still in the phase of having more providers and entities as part of the data collection. Therefore, the numbers are increasing despite the fact that we to a large extent have succeeded in replacing air travel with an extensive use of video conferencing. (See glossary below).

GLOSSARY

Scope 1: CO2 emissions from direct combustion of fossil energy sources.
Scope 2: CO2 emissions from procured energy in the form of electricity and heat.
Revenue: Total consolidated revenue (incl. revenue in not consolidated joint venture NKT Flexibles) amounted to standard metal prices so that varying metal prices do not give a misleading picture of the revenue.
Activity related intensity of CO2 emission: Tons of CO2 emissions per. mEUR in revenuevalued at standard metal prices.
Scope 3: CO2 emissions caused by air travels.
Scope 3: CO2 emissions caused by transportation of goods.

NKT and Carbon Disclosure Project

Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a non-profit organization supported by 531 institutional investors who represent assets worth 71 billion USD.

By means of yearly questionnaires the investors receive an insight into company climate activities.

In 2011, 4,000 of the world's leading companies are expected to report on their CO2 emissions and on initiatives to reduce it. The data will be compiled into a Global Report that will be published on the CDP website in autumn 2011. Here NKT’s data will also be available.
